Although he took up the rod mainly for practical reasons and originally hoped to focus on composing, Wilhelm Furtwngler is remembered taken in the character of one of the 20th century's most important, most argued-about conductors. The as if-Brucknerian music he wrote is now of merely passing interest; Furtwngler was a exactly personal, original artist only on the continuous pedestal. He approached performing as a manner of re-composing someone else's act, reconstituting it with a strong instil lation of the performer's own ideas and personal criticism....
