Storyline: JJ 'Jake' Gittes is a secluded detective who seems to specialize in spousal cases. He is hired by Evelyn Mulwray which time she suspects her husband Hollis, builder of the city's water supply system, of having every affair. Gittes does what he does most wise and photographs him with a young girl but in the ensuing scandal, it seems he was hired through an impersonator and not the certain Mrs. Mulwray. When Mr. Mulwray is set up dead, Jake is plunged into a composed of several elements web of deceit involving murder, incest and civil corruption all related to the incorporated town's water supply.
